South Korea is considered one of the closest allies and
greatest friends of the US in Asia today, whereas North Korea
is arguably one of Washington's biggest headaches. This
course examines the development of US-Korea relations from
the first encounters in the late 19th century to the
contemporary period. Students will learn to apply different
prisms of diplomatic history to the analysis of
transformations in political, economic, and cultural
relations between the US and North and South Korea and to
locate those changes within the regional dynamics of East
                 Asia
