EDUC-S 512 WKSHP IN SECONDARY EDUCATION (3 CR) 14792 SS2 ARR ARR ARR Manifold M 20 12 0 TOPIC : Summer Travel As Resource for Creating Culturally Sensitive Curricula Above class students must participate in an online orientation July 15 from 9a-12p. (Students who cannot attend orientation should contact instructor to make alternative arrangements) Summer should be a time of rest and relaxation for teachers who spend hours outside the classroom preparing instructional resources for their students. In this class teachers may consider how summer vacations may spark inspiration for meaningful, culturally-sensitive lessons in art, social studies or the natural sciences. Experiences with people, customs and the natural world in contexts different from the local community provide insights and understandings that can be transferred to classroom teaching and learning. Curricular and pedagogical issues important to engaging students in learning that is is sensitive to and about cultural differences will be explored. Final projects will include the development of a curriculum and body of instructional resources that will be taught to students during the academic year. These projects will be shared during a follow-up class meeting through an interactive online site. It is expected that students will have access to computers with high speed internet in order to get started in the class.
