NELC-N 306 TPCS IN MIDDLE EASTERN STUDIES (3 CR) VT: POETRY/FICT/PHIL ANCIENT EGYPT 21164 04:00P-05:15P TR BH 247 Vinson S 26 22 0 Above class open to undergraduates only Above course will introduce students to the literature of Ancient Egypt: its poetry, its prose fiction, and its philosophical and religious literature. Problems to be addressed include: the definition of literature; the problem of genre classification; major themes; the cultural functions of literature; methods of interpretation; compositional techniques, including description, characterization, plotting, word-play, etc.; and problem of translation. All Egyptian texts will be read in English translation. Above class meets with NELC-N 695 VT: ELEMENTARY MIDDLE EGYPTIAN I 21170 02:30P-03:20P MTWR SY 0008 Vinson S 26 19 0 Above class open to undergraduates only Above course will introduce students to the Middle Egyptian, the phase of the ancient Egyptian language as spoken and written from about 2000 to about 1300 BCE. Students will acquire a basic knowledge of the hieroglyphic script, essential grammar, and a working vocabulary of about 500 words. Above class meets with NELC-N 695
