                 the phase of the ancient Egyptian language as spoken and
                 written from about 2000 to about 1300 BCE. Students will
                 acquire a basic knowledge of the hieroglyphic script,
                 essential grammar, and a working vocabulary of about 500
                 words.

                 Above course will introduce students to the literature of
                 Ancient Egypt: its poetry, its prose fiction, and its
                 philosophical and religious literature. Problems to be
                 addressed include: the definition of literature; the problem
                 of genre classification; major themes; the cultural functions
                 of literature; methods of interpretation; compositional
                 techniques, including description, characterization,
                 plotting, word-play, etc.; and problem of translation.  All
                 Egyptian texts will be read in English translation.
